The Brant War Memorial

Dedicated in 1933, the Brant County War Memorial is a cenotaph displaying the names of Brantford, Brant County and Six Nations fallen from WWI, WWII and the Korean War.

The Brant County War Memorial Park on which the cenotaph resides is almost an acre in size.  The park is nicely landscaped with a low perimeter privet hedge.  Sloped flower beds flank the processional walkway that leads to the Cenotaph.

The War Memorial was first dedicated to the memory of the area men and women who gave their lives in the service of their country during the War of 1914-1918.  Later the monument was expanded to commemorate the fallen from World War II and the Korean War.

In 1952, plans began in to modify the Memorial to honour the fallen from WWII.  The granite “Memorial Gallery” was designed by local architect Chas. Brooks and added as a backdrop to the original Monument and rededicated on July 2, 1954.Brantford Cenotaph

The original design for the Monument by W.S. Allward included a group of bronze sculptures to represent “Humanity”, consisting of a wounded youth, a resolute mother, a figure praying and a piece of crippled field artillery. However, financial obstacles prevented the completion of the monument according to the original design. In recent years, the Brant County War Memorial Committee initiated the completion of the Memorial with seven bronze statutes designed and sculptured by Helen Granger Young. The figures represent men and women who made the Supreme Sacrifice and commemorate local armed forces Veterans. The statutes were unveiled and dedicated on September 12, 1992.
